This facility was established as an information center for exhibitions, research and study, creating and preserving a collection of works for public viewing on all forms of optical imagery. To this end numerous books, published both in Japan and abroad, have been collected, focusing mainly on collections of photographs or photographers' works. It also includes critical works, books on photographic and imagery history, books on technique and art, exhibition catalogues, specialist magazines, including back numbers and is extremely comprehensive.

This laboratory is the first facility in this country devoted to the preservation and restoration of photographs. It tests the suitability of materials for the packing and restoration of photographs conducting research into the optimum conditions for storing photographic art facts and the ideal lighting for exhibitions. It also makes studies and researches into the science of preservation in general, including the prevention of image deterioration and the process of restoration.

This gallery features independently organized and traveling exhibitions along with those held in conjunction with Japanese and international museums.

Most of the works in the collection, except those on display in the permanent exhibition, may be viewed when necessary for research or study. (A fee will be charged and viewing is by appointment only.)

At present, the museum has a collection of approximately 20,000 photographs, approximately 30,000 books and 720 titles of periodicals on photography and visual images. In order to make it possible for visitors to find the particular item they are interested in, we have developed an information retrieval system that allows them to search by image, artist's name, year, or motif. In addition to the Library on the fourth floor it can also be accessed from lobbies on the second and third floors.

This gallery is chiefly used to exhibit works from the museum's own collection as well as an array of works collected from around the world and Japan. Shows are hosted that present a diversity of unique exhibits.

At the service counter in the first floor entrance and the second floor lobby, while carrying out information guidance, the show ticket is sold.

The Entrance Hall, which is situated on the second floor, up the stairs from the front entrance and leading up to the Exhibition Gallery is fitted with windows that stretch from floor to ceiling which give it a light, airy atmosphere. The information counter at the entrance provides information on all the museum's facilities as well as issuing tickets for the various exhibitions. Information systems for searching for works and introducing artists are installed on the floors in front of the exhibition rooms, which you can access freely. In the adjacent cafe, various types of beverages are served.

The shop is a place where people can feel free to drop in, and to heighten their interest in photography and visual arts, it carries a comprehensive range of books and goods on these subjects. It is a very attractive shop specializing in catalogues and goods from museums around the world as well as postcards, stationary, etc. produced by our own museum.

This atelier has been established to aid the spread of education through workshop activity.It provides workshops on various aspects of photogaraphy,from shooting to darkroom techniques. In order to promote and encourage independent activities,the atelier is available for rent.

This wonderful BRUSSELES cafe will of course offer original light meals, including croque monsieur and baguette rolled with prosciutto ham. You can also enjoy Belgian beer. Please feel free to visit the cafe for a break while visiting the museum, for rendezvous, business meetings, short breaks etc.

Adds to the various exhibition,there is a special corner introducing the multifaceted breadth of the cultural history of imagery,allowing the visitor to experience shadow pictures as well as a display of works by moden artists using video or computer graphics.
